History

Our origins from 1874

Founded in 1874 by John Wilks and George Coppin following the loss of life and selfless heroism displayed at the wreck of the pilot schooner “Rip”, the Royal Humane Society of Australasia (RHSA) is not only Australia’s first charitable institution dedicated to recognising and supporting acts of extraordinary bravery but also the first federated institution in the country.

Initially established as The Victorian Humane Society, our organisation was born from a uniquely Australian vision: to honour those who risked their lives to save others at a time when no such recognition existed. In 1882, our mission expanded to encompass the entire nation, and with the consent of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, proudly became The Royal Humane Society of Australasia.

From the outset, the RHSA has been more than just a body for recognising bravery; it has been a lifeline for those who displayed courage and selflessness. We have from the very beginning sought to provide financial assistance to award recipients and their families, who may have been disadvantaged followed their act of bravery. Additionally, in our early days we pioneered lifesaving training programs, equipping Australians with the skills needed to protect lives and prevent tragedies in their communities.

For nearly 150 years, the RHSA has taken pride in being non-political and non-sectarian and in having the support of all governments, federal and state of whatever political creed.  We remain dedicated and committed to preserving and celebrating the stories of bravery that define our nation.
